Community-Word Project’s second graders at PS 1 in Brooklyn have been discussing the concept of community and what strengthens our own communities. In the photo above, teaching artist Gary is reading from Renee Watson’s book Where Hurricanes Happen. Our student, Leslie, is describing an illustration of the destruction caused by Hurricane Katrina. Afterward, the class talked about the strength of community after natural disasters. “We have to help each other,” Leslie and her classmate agreed.
