Bronx Community Revolution Freedom Persepolis Education High School Teaching Artists Give Voice Poetry BEA CWPNYC

Students at BEA used their written and illustrated observations from visual inquiry into a series of videos created by poet Aja Monet and Visual “street” artists Icy & Sot to collect source material. They used their observations in the creation of a personal narrative prose piece on the themes of freedom, community & revolution. This supports their curriculum, in which they are reading Persepolis, a graphic novel autobiography by Marjane Satrapi depicting her childhood up to her early adult years in Iran during and after the Islamic revolution.

Students created a collaborative poem on these themes using simile and metaphor.

Teaching Artists Pamella Allen and Nancy Volante are proud of the students’ engagement and progress in their individual and collaborative work as well as their ability to identify the connections found in the themes of Persepolis, their CWP work and their personal lives and communities.
